we do not care . Mediatek 2000 will destroy it anyway, if not in processor power, at least in heat management

It is also unwise to hold onto Android phones as their resale or trade-in value drops relative to iPhones.

That’s pretty early on since Qualcomm usually tends to launch its brand new flagship chipset at the end of the year.

I don’t understand why qualcomm switched to samsung nodes, however, they may have a future backup in mind. Maybe Samsung could have some potential service in the future. I really hope they change their mind about using samsung nodes, the 888 has lost so much potential because of it, and I don’t want the 898 to be another one. I know they could also bring more performance leaps for the next gen SoC and take their time, something which can be compared to the new GPU built into Samsung Exynos. But in all fairness, they should prioritize heat management first.
No one should be excited for it.
Based on the figures released by ARM themselves, we can expect a reduction in performance with chipsets next year. It will be exactly like in 2015, when QSD 800/801/805 devices were still competing with QSD 808/810 devices. The saving grace for phones is that 5G radio could become more efficient, as could the displays, and maybe the battery, but I don’t expect miracles here. The GPU could be boosted, but that’s a bit pointless since we don’t really use them to their potential. Neural processors (AI / NL / etc, etc.) are just a buzzword, they don’t do anything the GPU can’t, or at least the CPU.
What’s worth getting excited about is the hardware security of ARMv8.
It is possible that 2022 phones will receive longer updates (eg 5 years vs. 3 years) than 2021 phones. However, this is not in the cards of all OEMs except Apple. . Not to mention that the software front must catch up, so Android 13 and their OEM variants. This can be bad news for bootloaders, custom Roms, and root access.
So if I were a consumer now, I would stick with my QSD 855 phone. Or if upgrading from something slower than the QSD 778 is a good option, you won’t miss the QSD 898. Au instead, I would save my money and get the next upgrade (eg 2023 phone).

I don’t know about Sony, but maybe they haven’t fully locked the downgrade option. Xiaomi is pretty much the simplest as they even provide users with Motorola-identical bootloader unlocks which is good for open development and Oneplus. I don’t own an Oppo or Vivo so I’m not sure about them.
