Virgin Media O2 merger disrupts UK telecoms market
The slight decline in revenue in the UK telecommunications market in 2020 was largely a reflection of its strong competitive environment and high prices which offered consumers a plethora of service choices but left many operators struggling to develop sustained growth.
One strategy involved the merger of two major players – Liberty Global’s Virgin Media joining with Telefonica Group’s O2 to form Virgin Media O2 – into what is expected to become a strong competitor to BT. Greater industry consolidation is likely to be seen in the coming years as operators attempt to create the economies of scale and capital efficiency needed to generate consistent revenue growth.
In its previous form, O2 emerged as one of the successful bidders in the 700 MHz auction held in March 2021. H3 and EE also acquired a share of the available 60 MHz in the 700 MHz band. At the same time, 120 MHz of spectrum in the 3.6-3.8 GHz range has been made available, with O2, EE and Vodafone being the winners.
The licensees intend to use their concessions for 5G mobile services, although EE may initially use its possession of 700 MHz to alleviate some of the pressure on its overloaded LTE service. 5G deployments continue at a steady pace across the country, supported by the government’s 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy released in November 2020.
This includes £250m to fund a more diverse, competitive and innovative telecoms supply market, which has become urgently needed after Huawei and other vendors were banned from supplying certain 5G network components.
Most mobile network operators have transferred their core network to Ericsson, while Japanese companies such as Samsung, NEC and Fujitsu should see expanded opportunities supporting the wider 5G ecosystem.
